We are kicking off our second batch of updating guides for the Nexus devices and we will be starting off by publishing a guide for Nexus 9 (both GSM and WiFi models). Unlike the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6, the Nexus 9 is an 8.9 inch tablet that was released by HTC last year in November. The tablet offers top of the line specs and a beautifully crafted design. If you are willing to install Android 6.0 Marshmallow on your Nexus 9 manually, you can do so by following the simple guide below.

Updating Nexus 9 is just as easy as updating other Nexus phones, all you need are some basic tools and some Android knowledge and you are all set to go.


  • Backup your Nexus device.
  • At least 70 percent of available battery.
  • Make sure the USB debugging is enabled; to do so, go to Settings > About Phone and tap Build Number until you see a notification that Developer Options have been enabled.
  • Setup ADB on your computer > How to setup ADB.
  • Unlocked Nexus 9 > How to Unlock Bootloader on Nexus Devices.
  • Factor image for Nexus 9 > Download for LTE | WiFi.

Install Android 6.0 Marshmallow on Nexus 9

  1. Boot your Nexus 9 in Fastboot mode by turning it off and turning it back on by pressing and holding volume up and down keys together and then pressing the power button.
  2. Completely extract the firmware you downloaded and copy all the files to platform-tools folder in Android SDK folder.
  3. Now connect your Nexus 9 to your computer using the USB cable.
  4. From the files you pasted in the platform-tools folder, click on flash-all.bat if you’re on Windows and flash-all.sh if you’r on Linux.
  5. A new window will open regarding the installation, let the installation complete and don’t unplug your device at any cost.
  6. Once the installation is done, your Nexus 9 will reboot and you’ll see your official Android 6.0 Marshmallow boot-animation, you can safely unplug your device.

Voila, you have successfully updated your Nexus 9 to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, you can now enjoy all the Marshmallow goodies on your device. Though this guide has been fully tested, in case you run into any problems, feel free to let us know.
